Bad eec relay symptoms

The engine computer in your vehicle is a very vital piece of equipment. Without this part of your car running the right way, it will be nearly impossible for you to operate the vehicle as intended.

bad eec relay symptoms

In order for this part of the vehicle to operate correctly, it will need the power that the main relay supplies. The main relay helps to ensure that the engine computer gets the power that it needs to run and function as intended. The main relay is usually located underneath the hood in the relay box. The high heat that this relay is exposed to can create a lot of damage over time.

When the main relay begins to malfunctionyou will have to find a way to address the issues in a hurry. Failure to act quickly in a situation like this can lead to a lot of instability.

Most car owners take their engine for granted until there is an issue with it. If the engine will not crankthen you will need to get the main relay checked out. If the main relay is not supplying the engine computer with the power it needs, then the engine will not be able to crank and run the right way. Failing to get the main relay replaced will usually lead to the car being unusable.

Symptoms of a Bad or Failing Main Relay (Computer/Fuel System)

If the car cranks and then dies almost immediately after, then the main relay may be to blame. The only way to ensure that this problem stops is by taking the time to get the relay tested and replaced if needed. Having a car that cuts off all of the time can be very frustrating and dangerous in certain situations. Replacing the main relay is the only way to regain the consistency that your vehicle has lost.

Symptoms of faulty EEC Relay???? Results 1 to 22 of Hi guys, 86 GT 5sp I just noticed it the other day driving - for a half a second or less, the car quit, gauge needles flickered down to zero, and then it came back.

Driving last night, car doesn't want to stay running, runs perfectly fine, then boom, like I shut off the ignition, dies, then comes back to life. Luckily, I was close to home so I let it cool down for 2 mins and limped it home. Letting it idle in my driveway, it would intermittently act like there was no power I heard my Fuel Pump relay clicking, and then opened the hood and heard my WOT Cutoff relay clicking as well when the car would "miss".

I've never had an EEC relay problem, so I don't know if these symptoms are normal. Aside from EEC relay, what could cause this odd situation? Check the ignition switch lately? And a 1-of Deep Blue Pearl Marauder 4. If that's good, then I'd suspect the pick up in the distributor. Overmiles driven in Four Eyes, and overin Fox Body cars. Swapped in new EEC relay, let it warm up for 20 mins, took it for a 10 minute drive, no problems.

It's idling where it "was" again, too. When I was experiencing problems, when it would stay running, it idled around likewhich sounds awesome with my cam, but not where it should be. New relay and it's idling at and drove around perfect. Would dizzy pickup affect all of my relays clicking on and off? Dunno if that's also true for the compressor clutch relay. I would check to see if the voltage to the EEC is not dropping out.

If you can set up a volt meter to monitor battery volts as you drive, like at the cigarette lighter or a point that is easy to connect to. Ray 86 Mustang LX 3. Used to own 08 Magnum The Roadie Wagon Too many. Monitoring is always a good tip, but it's not as simple as hanging off the cigarette lighter socket. Our cars don't have a single power feed, other than the battery itself. So it's necessary to identify which feed we need to monitor, and connect the meter there. In the case of the ECU and fuel pump, those are each on their own dedicated power feed, with the ECU relay controlled by the ignition switch, which is on yet another power feed.

None of these are shared with the feed for the always-on accessories, such as the cigarette lighter. I think it's a moot point now, but being as I try to never replace parts that I haven't proven are failing, I definitely would have hung a meter on the output side of the EEC relay, and worked back from there.

It is the central control unit of most vehicles and controls a variety of functions, such as electrical system power distribution, emissions, ignition, and fuel systems. It is a very important, if not the most important component of a modern engine management system, and just the same as any other important electrical component it is powered through a relay. If the relay fails, or has any issuesit can cause the vehicle to have all sorts of problems, and may even render it undriveable.

Usually a problem with the ECM power relay will produce a few symptoms that can alert the driver of a problem that should be serviced. One of the first symptoms of a problem with the ECM power relay is no power when the key is inserted. If the ECM power relay fails it can cut off power to the entire vehicle.

A failed relay will disable the dash lights and warning chimes that normally come on when the key is inserted into the ignition, and will probably be unable to start or turn over the vehicle. Another common symptom of a problem with the ECM power relay is an engine that will not start or turn over. The fuel and ignition systems, as well as several other engine management functions, of many vehicles are controlled by the ECM.

A bad relay may cause the vehicle to crank, but not startor sometimes not even crank at all. A failed ECM power relay can also cause a battery drain or dead battery. If the relay shorts it can leave power on to the computer, even when the vehicle is turned off. This will place a parasitic drain on the battery, which will eventually cause it to go dead.

Without it the entire engine management system will be disabled and the vehicle will not run. For this reason, if you suspect that your ECM power relay may be having an issue, have the vehicle inspected by a professional technician, such as one from YourMechanic, to determine if the relay should be replaced.

And free is good, right? This page is for personal, non-commercial use. The ignition relay is one of the most important electronic relays found on modern vehicles.

When the relay fails or has an issue it can cause major problems with the operation of the vehicle. Usually a bad or failing ignition relay will produce a few symptoms that can notify the driver of a potential issue. One of the most common symptoms of a failed ignition relay is a car that suddenly stalls while operating.

If the ignition relay shorts, burns out, or otherwise fails while the engine is operating it will cut off power to the fuel pump and ignition system.

Bad Fuel Pump Relay Symptoms

This will cause the vehicle to immediately stall due to fuel and spark being cut off. In some instances of a faulty relay the vehicle will be able to restart once the relay cools off, only to stall out once again after the relay overheats.

Another symptom of a faulty ignition relay is a no power condition. If the relay fails it will cut off power to fuel pump and ignition system, which will result in a no power, and therefore no start condition. You may find that turning the key may power on the accessories, and may even crank the engine, however the vehicle will not start due to there not being any power directed to the fuel and ignition system.

Similar symptoms can also be caused by a wide variety of other issues, so a proper diagnosis is recommended in order to make certain what the issue is. A dead battery is another symptom of a faulty ignition relay.

If the relay has an internal short it may keep power fed to the ignition and fuel system, even when ignition cylinder is in another position, or the key is removed. This will cause the fuel pump and ignition components to remain powered on, drawing current, at all times, which will eventually lead to a dead battery. Aside from draining the battery this may also cause accelerated wear on the components, notably the fuel pump, due to having them powered on, but not operating.

In certain instances it may be possible for the relay to overheat to the point of burning up and melting. This may make it difficult to remove, and in some instances can even lead to the replacement of the entire fuse box.

While servicing the ignition relay is not generally considered routine maintenance, it can sometimes fail and cause major issues for the vehicle. If you suspect that your ignition relay may be having an issue, have the vehicle inspected by a professional technician, such as one from YourMechanic, to determine if the relay should be replaced.

Checked cam shaft positioning sensor. Key on. The relay in the enging compartment labeled PCM relay, gets power on its coil at random. Interior fuse 20 good. The problem seems to be between the interior fuse and the PCM relay in the engine power dist box.

Seems like the pcm conrtol relay is bad

How do I test that module. It is not mentioned in the Haynes book I am not ruling out possibility of ignition switch. Please help.

Do you. Make srue to check fuse r in underhood fuse box along with pcm relay they may be bad and that is power source for truck. Also scan for codes if mil comes oand try freeze frame it may pick it up. If higher or lower it could e your problem as well as the connection. Was this answer. All fuses checked out early in all this.

No codes stored. No freeze frame data. Relay is good swapped it out with another just for fun. I'll check crank sensor, but what about the question I asked? Is there a way to check the PCM relay module? It's under the air intakenear the power distribution box. I've removed the bottom of the underhood fuse box looking for loose connections. Also, I cleaned the ground strap and ground wire at the shock tower by the PCM not the ones at the battery.

They are all clean. It wasn't real dirty but was worth cleaning. A few times over the past few months, the temp guage was not reading. Dave Was this answer. It's for cruise control only as it only has vss input and output in it then ties intor cruise Most pcms are trial and error or if you have a pro type scan tool it can check everything but the pcm.

And it leaves it to just an experieince or tryit and see what happens. Still think y ou ought to go to crank sensor or connetion problem even on cam sensor. Also have your tried to reset your anti theft as that can do it as well. Thanks, As I mentioned first question the cam sensor pulses when cranking v connection seems good.

No anti theft on vehicle, raining now here in Fayetteville. Crank sensor will have to wait. So long as the module mounted on the cruise control does not effect starting in any way, I have to take that as my answer as to wheather or not it can be tested.

Would be the Cam shaft or crank shaft sensor?Electronic Control Assemblybut also supplies power to the fuel injectors, the fuel pump relay, and a few other emissions related solenoids.
